Art graduate Lauren Porter knitted a Ferrari sportscar for her honours degree at Bath Spa University. The classic red bodywork consists of 250 squares of garter stitch made by Lauren and 20 family members and friends. The windows are V-shaped stocking stitch, while the details are crochet and the badge is embroidered. It’s all supported by a steel frame which Lauren, 22, of Greatham, Hants, welded herself.

Proving Once Again The Credibility of Art Critics

A sculpture was rejected by a top art show – but its empty plinth was accepted and displayed on its own.

David Hensel’s work, a laughing head, was submitted to the Royal Academy for its Summer Exhibition. But when he went to a preview all he found was the plinth with the tiny piece of wood intended to keep the head in place on it. The judges thought the statue and plinth were separate works – and liked the plinth better, reports the Sun.

Mr Hensel, 64, of East Grinstead, West Sussex, said: “I was very excited about seeing my sculpture on display. But I walked all the way round the gallery looking for it and couldn’t find it. Eventually I saw the base on a shelf with the piece of wood that was meant to keep the head in place. At first I was shocked but now I’m amused. It’s just a bit strange.”

In a statement the Academy said: “The two parts were judged independently. The head was rejected. The base was thought to have merit and was accepted.”

Say It Ain’t So, Billie

billiepiper.jpg Actress Billie Piper is to leave Doctor Who at the end of the current series, the BBC has confirmed. But the corporation refused to comment on reports that her character, Rose Tyler, would die in the final episode.

“It has been an amazing adventure and I can confirm it comes to an end, for now at least, as series two climaxes,” the former pop star said.

Writer Russell T Davies said the Doctor Who team had created “a stunning exit” for Piper’s character.

You Can’t Make these Things up

ipodtpholder.jpg A US firm has invented a new iPod accessory which combines the portable music player with a toilet roll holder. This lavatory sound system combines a toilet roll dispenser with an I-Pod docking station complete with four high performance 'moisture-free' speakers.

Manufacturers say the iCarta is designed to "enhance your experience in the smallest room", reports the Daily Mail. [Whatever that means.]

The gadget, which costs around £50, merges an iPod docking station with a loo roll dispenser [and] delivers high-quality sounds from moisture-resistant speakers, according to the manufacturer Atech Flash Technology.

It also re-charges the iPod while playing songs – either pre-programmed or a random selection.

Do you wonder what the playlist will be?

Dag Nab It! Forgot My Teeth Again!

A 70-year-old shoplifter tried to evade capture by biting an arresting officer before realising he'd left his dentures at home.

Pensioner Gustav Ernegger turned on the policeman when he grabbed him as he ran out of a clothes shop in Braunschweig, Germany, after stealing a shirt. But instead of sinking his teeth into the officer's arm, he was only able to leave a wet mark from his gums.

Police spokesman Gunther Brauner said: "He tried to bite the officer several times, but had forgotten to put his false teeth in and so was unable to cause him any harm."
