Crook Tip: Make sure your getaway car has gas

AP via ABC News

A man charged with robbing a Royal Oak, Michigan, 7-Eleven might have avoided capture if hed spent some of the loot at a nearby gas station.

David K. Booth, 44, of Royal Oak, was arrested early Tuesday while sitting in the getaway truck, its gas tank empty, police said. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday in 44th District Court to one count of unarmed robbery.

Booth entered the 7-Eleven, implied he had a weapon and demanded the money in the cash register, police said. The clerk complied, then called 911 after the robber drove away, police said.

An officer responding to the call noticed a pickup parked on the side of a road about a mile away. The suspicious officer checked inside, saw a man matching the robbers description, arrested him and, for good measure, found the allegedly stolen cash.

“We recovered everything,” Deputy Police Chief Chris Jahnke told The Daily Tribune.

No wonder they keep the recipes secret

United Press International

The state government of Kerala in southern India has banned the production and sale of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the ban was being imposed because of alleged health hazards posed by the soft drinks.

“We have arrived at the decision to ask both Coke and Pepsi to stop production and distribution of all their products, based on scientific studies which have proved that they are harmful,” Achuthanandan said.

Last week, the Center for Science and Environment, a public interest research and advocacy group in India, released a study that found a “cocktail of between three to five different pesticides in all samples” of Coca-Cola and Pepsi products tested in India — 24 times higher than European Union standards

Production and sale of Coca-Cola and Pepsi products were previously banned in government and educational institutions by many states.

The Supreme Court of India last week ordered Coca-Cola and Pepsico to reveal the ingredients in their products or face a potential national ban.

When opening a grenade do not use a sledgehammer

Reuters via Yahoo! News
A Brazilian man died on Tuesday when he tried to open what police believe was a rocket-propelled grenade with a sledgehammer in a mechanical workshop on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Another man who was in the workshop at the time of the explosion was rushed to a hospital with severe burns, a police officer told Reuters. The workshop was destroyed and several cars parked outside caught fire.

Police found several unexploded army issue rocket-propelled grenades in the workshop. They believe the ammunition had been brought there by scavengers wanting to sell them as scrap metal…

Looking for a vacation idea?

camp.jpgIgor Shpektor, the mayor of Vorkuta [Russia]  is looking for investors for his proposal to reconstruct one of the Stalin-era labor camps – complete with watchtowers, barbed wire, guard dogs and gruel.

He believes that there are plenty of “extreme tourists” who will be willing to fork over least US$450 for a three-day stay.

Um, sure. Line forms at the left.

Strange holes in the ground

Residents of Novoselovo district in the Krasnoyarsk region [of Russia] have come across a mysterious phenomenon in the field. They discovered several tunnels of unknown origin in an area located some 100 meters away from the highway connecting the cities of Krasnoyarsk and Abakan , in the vicinity of the village of Kurgany, Siberian News Agency reports.

There are about 10 holes in the field. Each hole has an entrance to a cave-like hollow place in the earth. Some of the tunnels are big enough for a person of medium height to stand up straight. According to one of the suppositions, all the underground passages are interconnected in a network. A few daredevils equipped with flashlights attempted walking across the tunnels.Local residents have a number of theories to explain the origin of the tunnels. Some people believe the tunnels are the work of unidentified pranksters, others blame mysterious animals which reportedly dig holes in the ground. According to yet another theory, the tunnels may somehow be related to an earthquake that occurred in the area 3 years ago.

Krasnoyarsk scientists have not yet made any official statements as to the explanation of the phenomenon.

Fast cash at churches?

A senior clergyman says churches should have cash machines.

Archdeacon of Lincoln, the Venerable Arthur Hawes, said the machines would be a service to the community by churches. According to the Mirror he said: “People in rural parts have to travel long distances to get cash, which costs them money. So why not put a cash machine somewhere handy, like in a church?”

The proposal had not been opposed by parishioners.

Canon Chris Sugden, of the Anglican Mainstream group, backed the idea.

He said: “With the withdrawal of banks and post offices in rural areas, it is appropriate that churches, as community buildings should be available for services of this kind.”

Get out your money. Christmas arrived a little early.

Santa has turned up at Harrods – four months early. As a result of the sunny weather he wore a red safari suit and pith helmet and he brought a zebra instead of Rudolph.

Fake snow and carols greeted Santa as he told London shoppers there were only 20 weeks until Christmas reports The Sun.

A Harrods spokesman said tourists flock to the opening of its Christmas World department.

Incredible. The money changers have won.
