Portsmouth Today
bell.jpg A drunken [Portsmouth, UK] worshipper was saved by the bell after he fell asleep and got trapped inside a church for more than an hour. When the man awoke he found the doors locked and had no option but to start ringing the church bell to summon help.

With the prospect of being stuck inside overnight, and worried about rumoured ghosts, he started ringing out the morse code for SOS. As dusk began to fall, at about 4.30pm on Monday, he was still ringing for his life with no help on the way.

Eventually, a resident living near St Faith’s Church in West Street, Havant, realised something was wrong. He spotted two Police Community Support Officers and they sprung into action. They could hear the man inside but all the doors were locked. They frantically contacted church verger Vicki Mockford who raced down to get him out.

She said: ‘I was called by police saying someone was using the bell as a sign they were trapped. When we found him inside he told us he went into the church to have a sit down but fell asleep. He told the police he had been drinking which may have made him a bit dozy. He looked quite embarrassed about the whole incident when we found him. Maybe after this he might consider taking up bell ringing as a hobby.’

‘Poe toaster’ s’ 58th year — and counting

CNN.com
poesgrave.jpg For the 58th straight year, a mysterious visitor left birthday cognac and roses at Edgar Allan Poe’s grave Friday, and he was watched by more onlookers than ever, a faithful viewer said.

Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum, said 55 people braved a chilly morning to glimpse the annual ritual of the mysterious visitor known as the Poe toaster.

“If I were the Poe toaster, and I saw and heard that crowd, I wouldn’t show up,” Jerome said before the ceremony.

As in years past, the visitor placed a half-empty bottle of cognac and three red roses at the grave on Poe’s birthday, Jerome said.
