Dumb Crook caught by his own CCTV

BBC NEWS | Scotland
An Edinburgh shop supervisor staged a robbery at his work – only to be caught out by the stores own CCTV camera.

John Tait got friend Christopher McGirr to beat him up before he stole more than £3,300 from the safe at Scotmid in Calder Road on 24 July last year.

Tait, 21, who was found bleeding, said he had been attacked and robbed.

However, he and McGirr, 20, later admitted staging the robbery. They will be sentenced at Edinburgh Sheriff Court next month.

The court heard that when police checked CCTV footage they saw Tait opening the shop on his day off and going in with McGirr.

Beer Tsunami

A flood of beer swept through the streets of St. Giles, England, on 17 October 1814. Caused by a rupture in a brewery tank containing 3500 barrels of beer, the tidal wave killed nine people and demolished two houses.

Link to lots more beer trivia, some of it probably even true.

Nigeria isn’t just for scams anymore

jolly-roger.gif

When stupid scams start to fail in Nigeria what do they do? Why switch to piracy, of course.

More at MSNBC.com

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Maritime pirate attacks worldwide shot up 14 percent in the first nine months of 2007 from a year earlier, with Somalia and Nigeria showing the biggest increases, an international watchdog said Tuesday. While Africa remains problematic, Southeast Asia’s Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest waterways, has been relatively quiet, the International Maritime Bureau said in its report.

A total of 198 attacks on ships were reported between January and September this year, up from 174 in the same period in 2006, the IMB said.

He’s his own grandpa

Man married grandmother

Russian authorities are investigating after discovering a man had married his own grandmother.

Boris Golovska, 30, married his 79-year-old grandmother Katarina in the town of Vladimir, east of Moscow. Registry office officials reportedly failed to check whether the couple were related when they tied the knot.

The marriage has now been annulled and local prosecutors have said they are investigating the case.

whip them into shape

A female astronaut set to take charge of the International Space Station has been given a whip to keep her crew in line.

Peggy Whitson was presented with a “kamcha” – a traditional Kazakh riding whip – a day before she is due to blast off. A Russian official at the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Sergei Semchenko, said the gift was to help her keep her male crew in line.

How do you slap the cuffs on a cow?

Cow in custody

cow.jpg

A cow is in custody after causing traffic accidents that killed at least six people this year, Cambodian police say.

The cow, described by police as white and 1.5m tall, was standing in the middle of a main road in the Cambodian capital of Phom Penh last night when a motorcyclist crashed into it and died.

Earlier this year, the cow was responsible for an accident that killed five people when a truck veered off the road and crashed as its driver tried to avoid the animal.

Police officer Pin Doman said he was holding the cow at his police station.

He said the cow’s owner had been warned four times in the past to keep his cattle tied up and could face prison time, the Associated Press reported.

I was only going 29.177196 MPH, Your Honor.

Boffin escapes

A scientist charged with speeding escaped prosecution when a gadget built into his mobile phone proved he was under the limit. Dr. Phillip Tann was accused of driving at 42mph in a 30mph zone – but told magistrates he was only doing 29.177196mph.

His lawyer then produced data from a revolutionary device he was testing showing the exact time, location and speed of his car.

Instead of being 12mph over the limit when his Mercedes was zapped by a mobile speed camera in Sunderland, he was actually less than 0.8mph under. The case has now been dropped.

eat moths

bogongmoth.jpeg
Australians are being urged to get rid of a plague of moths – by eating them. The “munch a moth” campaign is being led by Jean-Paul Bruneteau, 51, a French-born chef, reports the Daily Telegraph.

He first began eating the brown bogong moths 11 years ago while researching a book on bush tucker eaten by Aborigines.

“They have a lovely popcorn flavour, like hazelnut,” he said.

Man! That’s one funny looking cow!

N.D. moose

moose.jpg

When Beverly and Ernie Fischer gathered up their cattle this fall in Morton County [North Dakota], they rounded up a little more than they expected.

“We were moving some cattle, and we got a moose,” Ernie Fischer said. “He thinks he is a cow,” said his wife.

Ernie Fischer said it was difficult to get the young bull moose away from the cattle, and workers put it in a separate corral until it could be released. The moose also broke fences on the ranch 20 miles south of Mandan.

……………………

This is the third incident this year of a moose joining a herd of cows in North Dakota.

Daughter born October 2. Not odd, you say?

Jenna and William Cotton welcomed their third child, Kayla, on October 2, which is not newsworthy on its’ own. What is newsworthy is that Kayla has two brothers, both of whom were also born on October 2…Ayden in 2003 and Logan in 2006.

In case you’re wondering what the odds are of having three children born on the same date in three different years, it works out to about 1 in 7.5 million according to Bill Notz, a statistics professor at Ohio State University.

Gold lingerie

A Chinese jewellery store has made a set of women’s lingerie out of solid gold. It took a team of four goldsmiths four months to make the gold underwear which weighs 950 grams.

The owner of the Shenyang Cuihua Gold store, of Shenyang city, says it’s the first of its kind in China. “It’s for demonstration, not for sale,” he told the Shenyang Evening News.

However, the store says the gold bra and pants would be worth more than £13,000, if they were for sale.
