Around 90 per cent of the world’s population is right-handed, and it is easier for right-handers to button shirts from the right. So why do women’s garments button from the left?

This is an example in which history seems to matter. When buttons first appeared in the 17th century, they were seen only on garments of the wealthy. At that time it was the custom for rich men to dress themselves and for [rich] women to be dressed by servants. [Since most servants were right handed, it was easier for thrm to button clothing from their right and therefor from the lady’s left]

Sorry, there’s no refrigerator in the coat check room. (Thanks, Carrie.)

I recently recieved this picture from Carrie, Oldsters View’s Official Sign Spotter, that she took at the entrance to a casino. Here’s part of the note that came with it:

“I recently got a note that because I am a “loyal player” at the nearby Mount Airy Casino in Mt. Pocono, PA, I was eligible to come and pick up a free Easter Ham as a reward.  Outside the casino, employees dispensed beautiful 10 lb. spiral hams to the many loyal players who were eligible.   Apparently, many players were not smart enough to pick up their hams on the way out, causing the casino to put up the sign below.  I was so amused I just had to take a picture, assuming it was the only sign of its kind in the world. “
