Looking for that perfect gift for your sweetie?

No buyer Oddly Enough – Reuters

Global auction house Sotheby’s failed to hammer off a 72.22-carat, “D” flawless white diamond at its Asian sales last week in a possible sign of weakness in the global diamond trade.

The large diamond which had a pre-sale estimate of $10-12 million, attracted a final bid of HK$73 million ($9.24million) that fell short of the reserve price and went unsold, said Sotheby’s press officer Rhonda Yung.

The diamond was later sold to a private buyer for an undisclosed sum, Sotheby’s said.

Have the pixies turned to crime?

Teensy thief – Reuters

A thief broke into the headquarters of Austria’s ruling political party by wriggling through a post flap in the front door, a party official said on Friday.

The burglar squeezed through the 35x35cm [roughly 14 inches by 14 inches] hole early on Thursday and stole laptops, mobile phones, notebooks and cash before crawling out, Catherina Straub, spokeswoman for the Social Democrats, said.

“It is such a tiny door for post and newspapers, he must have obviously been extremely small,” she said, adding that the culprit had not been caught.

Oops!? Not really. He knew it all along.

the Daily Mail

A [Cornwall] man who built a home-made boat in his back garden over five years was left scratching his head after discovering he’d made it too big for him to get it out.

Trained engineer, John Melling, started building the 30-feet Trimaran yacht at the bottom of his back garden five years ago – but it has now outgrown its home and is proving a problem to move.

Mr Melling, who works as a financial adviser, has completed the sleek vessel, which is 26 feet wide, and has grown so big that it has become wedged behind the fence at his home in Tywardreath in Cornwall.

Actually he knew all the time that it would be too big to get out. Originally he had planned to have the RAF airlift it out. Seems they used to do that sort of thing as a training exercise but no longer do. So now he plans to take the fence down in order to get it out.

Yet another dumb crook. Is there any other kind?

KXNet.com North Dakota News

Burleigh County authorities made a drug arrest after stopping a car on Interstate 94 because it had steam rolling out from under the hood.

……………………………

According to a sheriff’s lieutenant, the engine had overheated because a bag of marijuana hidden under the hood had blocked the air flow and caused the engine to overheat.

The driver, yet another criminal genius, was charged with “felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and misdemeanor driving under suspension.”

NOISE?! Laddie, that’s PIPES! The music of Heaven!

Times Online

Their high-pitched skirl has put fear into the hearts of Scotland’s enemies and sent sensitive tourists reaching for the cotton wool.

Now, however, the bagpipes are to be quietened by an edict from Brussels.

……………………………

Beginning in April, bagpipes played in Belgium have to confine their volume to not more than 85 decibels. Could be a problem because a full bore pipe band can crank out more sound, 122 decibels, than a chain saw, 116 decibels. So the bands have been ordered to quiet down or wear ear plugs.

Who says? The European Union health and safety laws. What we would do without government agencies to look out for us and protect us from these big problems. Now those pipe bands that continually march up and down in front of all the houses in Belgium will no longer be a hearing threat to Belgians. (That’s cynicism, in case you missed it.)

Don’t these European Union health and safety guys have anything to do?
