Don’t mess with the Bishop’s Cathedral

The death in police custody of a man suspected of vandalising Dornoch Cathedral has led to speculation that a curse, said to have been laid in mediaeval times, has struck again.

Gilbert de Moravia, Bishop of Caithness, invoked a solemn curse “upon those who destroy and injure” the fabric of the 13th-century building in his deed declaring the foundation of the cathedral, which was completed in 1239. When the much-respected warrior-cleric died in 1245, he was interred beneath the floor of the cathedral. He was subsequently made a saint.

Daryl Shearer, a 19-year-old arrested for allegedly vandalising and stealing money from the ancient building on Friday, October 24, died mysteriously in a police cell in Dingwall later the same weekend, while awaiting a court appearance.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out and no cause of death has been released.

Boulder police have ticketed about a dozen people running naked on the street while sporting freshly gutted pumpkins on their heads as part of an annual Halloween event…

The event known in Boulder as the Naked Pumpkin Run has been held for 10 years. This year it drew a huge crowd, prompting concern from police. Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner says officers “wanted to do something before the event got out of hand.”

Crime tip: Be sure the cops are gone before breaking into a police station

[A] 16-year-old youth was apprehended after officers working in the back of the Parks Police Station in Adelaide, Australia, heard the sound of breaking glass.

The long arm of the law did not have to reach far to deliver justice, and the boy was caught in the station hall. The officers, who expressed surprise at his audacity, swiftly locked him up.

A police spokesman said the officers heard knocking on the front doors of the station in the early hours of the morning. “The knocking quickly turned into the sound of smashing glass, with the patrol allegedly locating the youth in the front foyer of the police station,” he said.

The spokesman said the youth did not give a reason for his actions, but may have had “a bit too much to drink.”
