The mystery of the Ansel Adams garage sale negatives keeps taking on new twists, but the latest twist might have solved it once and for all.
KTVU in Oakland is reporting that a Bay Area woman named Mariam l. Walton has come forward with apparently solid proof that the photographs were not taken by Ansel Adams but her Uncle Earl. She was watching KTVU report on the story Tuesday when she suddenly saw a photograph of the Jeffrey Pine on Sentinal Dome and recognized it as a print her uncle Earl Brooks made back in 1923.
There is an overlay at the above link that allows you to blink compare the two photos which the author of the post claims are identical but they are in fact not exactly the same. Note differences in the positions of smaller parts of the tree across the bottom and differences in the clouds. So the mystery continues, in my opinion, although they could have been taken with the same camera from the same spot a few minutes apart. If that is true then it looks like Uncle Earl could be our guy.
An out-of-work truck driver has been jailed for five years for trying to sell London’s exclusive Ritz Hotel for £250 million.
Anthony Lee had persuaded a financier and a property dealer that he was an associate of the Barclay brothers, the hotel’s owners, reports the BBC.
In what the judge called ‘an elaborate and outrageous scam’, Lee intimated that the brothers had secret reasons for selling their hotel and wanted to do it through a third party.
Miami is about to get a taste of Times Square, now that the city’s commissioners have given their okay to a plan that would erect a pair of towering electronic signs.Even though the project faced vehement opposition from some residents, the commissioners still voted 4-1 to approve the billboards, which would reach nearly 500 feet into the Miami sky.The reason? Money. The billboards will provide the city with at least $2 million a year in fees.

I wonder how these monstrosities will behave in a hurricane. Having a 500 foot sign fall on you could ruin your whole day.
Paul Yarrow — star of BBC1, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and even the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network — has appeared on television more than 100 times this year. The only problem is that the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and Al Jazeera don’t want him to be there.
What they want is for their TV reporters to be left in peace. What they don’t want is Yarrow — a balding, fat man who often wears a wrinkled white sweater — popping up behind their star correspondents, distracting viewers from the Very Important News that they are trying to deliver.
Mr. Yarrow has pretty much clinched the idea that “reporters” get their news from a police scanner. How else would he be able to be on the scene of 100 live reports?

A police officer responding to the LaPorte County Fair to make an arrest was delayed by an attendant at the gate who insisted that he pay.

Rick Norsigian’s hobby of picking through piles of unwanted items at garage sales in search of antiques has paid off for the Fresno, California, painter. Two small boxes he bought 10 years ago for $45 — negotiated down from $70 — are now estimated to be worth at least $200 million, according to a Beverly Hills art appraiser.
Those boxes contained 65 glass negatives created by famed nature photographer Ansel Adams in the early period of his career. Experts believed the negatives were destroyed in a 1937 darkroom fire that destroyed 5,000 plates.

A bear went for a little joyride in the town of Larkspur, Colorado Friday morning when it got into an unlocked car and knocked the gear into neutral, sending it down a hill and knocking over a few trees before coming to a full stop.
The Denver Post reports that an adult black bear got behind the wheel after the driver’s son left a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a stick of deodorant in the car. The door closed behind the bear and as it looked for a way out, the gear shift was bumped into neutral and sent the car rolling 125 feet backwards down a hill.
Many thanks to Wayne for sending me this video link with pictures of the car’s interior and an interview with the owner and his son.
A woman suspected of robbing two Butte County (California) banks last week was arrested by Davis police about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when her escape from an alleged bank robbery there failed because she locked herself out of her car.
Chico police detective Terry Moore said he was contacted by Davis police and told the suspect, Laura Jane Murray, 48, was attempting to break a window on her vehicle when they arrived.
Police in North Carolina said they arrested a man who allegedly loaded his gun with a wad of toilet paper and shot his wife in the back.
She was treated for powder burns and he was arrested…presumably for assault with a squeezable weapon.

A Lufkin (Texas) woman claims she saw the ghost of her mother-in-law standing behind her dancing daughter this week.Dezarae Smith’s 6-year-old daughter, Ivy, and husband, Corey, were on the front porch of their home on Wednesday when a young boy took a picture of the two with his cell phone.
“They were going fishing, and my daughter asked this little boy to take a picture of her while she was dancing,” Smith said. “There were only three people on the porch at the time. I was at work when the picture was taken, but when I saw it, my mouth just dropped. I don’t believe in ghosts, but it made a believer out of me.”
A form stands behind the little girl in the picture, and Smith said you can see the outline of a woman’s face, nose and eyes, as well as a hand.
