Nearly 20,000 camels from the UAE and other Gulf Arab countries have converged on Abu Dhabi’s western region for one of the world’s largest camel beauty contests involving prizes worth nearly Dh35 million.

The camels have been brought from various parts of the UAE as well as neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and other Gulf nations for the week-long beauty competition in the western town of Dhafra.

The contest, which started on Thursday, will stretch until next Friday and officials described it as one of the largest camel beauty pageantry events in the world in terms of the value of prizes and number of camels.

Granny: I made my withdrawal. Now gun it, baby!

When an elderly woman asked Luke Weimert to give her a ride to a bank in Elysian Wednesday, he had no idea his good deed would result in his arrest at gunpoint.

Weimert thought 70-year-old Sandra Leanne Bathke was going to the bank to withdraw some cash to pay her rent. He was an hour into his interview with investigators before he realized Bathke, who is a tenant in his mother’s Janesville apartment building, was accused of robbing the bank.

In case you wondered what happened to Henry IV’s head…

Four centuries after his death, King Henry IV of France is being laid to rest. Or at least his head is.

A team of multidisciplinary researchers announced today (Dec. 14) that a mummified head and its brain contents long thought to belong to the beloved king really are his. The head, which has been in the hands of private owners, had been removed from Henry IV’s body by revolutionaries in 1793 during a symbolic desecration of the tombs of the monarchs of France.

…cockroaches prefer not to turn left. Researchers say it’s a safe bet that the roaches don’t have (a) mental block. Instead, they believe that the right-turn bias shown by the creepy-crawly insects indicates that most roaches favor their right side, just as most humans are right-handed.
