Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar

…unless it is 268ft 4in long like the one rolled by long time Cuban cigar roller Jose Castelar Cairo. There’s a picture of both the cigar and the man at the link.

Not bad for only 12 minutes of screen time…

As part of Women’s History Month, we remember Cleveland native Margaret Hamilton, aka The Wicked Witch of the West. Who can forget her green-faced villain from “The Wizard of Oz,” with those long, pointy fingers and that frightening cackle?

UK woman sits on it…or, in this case, “in” it

A British woman was celebrating after beating a £110 $180 fine in a 30-hour standoff with a parking inspector.

Jessica Davey, 22, from Salisbury, in southern England, barricaded herself in her Renault Clio for more than a day after parking inspector Anthony Brindley booted her vehicle despite its valid parking permit, the Salisbury Journal reported.

The care worker discovered the clamp when she tried to go to work on Monday.

“I couldn’t afford to pay him, and I didn’t see why I should, so I decided to stay with my car until he took it [the boot] off so he couldn’t tow it away,” she said.

Oh, to be in Iceland on Husband’s Day…

Coat of arms of Iceland

Image via Wikipedia

Today is Bóndadagur, or Husband’s Day, when wives and girlfriends in Iceland pamper their men. Bóndadagur also marks the beginning of the old Icelandic month of Thorri, during which Thórrablót mid-winter feasts are held across the country.

In many households, Bóndadagur is celebrated by eating the traditional Thorri food: dried fish, smoked lamb, putrefied shark and soured blood and liver pudding along with other soured meat products, including ram testicles. The delicacies are often washed down with a shot or two of brennivín, Icelandic schnapps.

Seems to me it would take more than a shot or two of schnapps to get those “goodies” down…

Feeling sorry for yourself? Think about this armless toe pianist

A musician who lost both arms in a childhood accident and plays the piano with his toes has won “China’s Got Talent,” performing his version of James Blunt’s wistful love song “You’re Beautiful” to a packed audience at the Shanghai Stadium.

All three judges on the show Sunday praised 23-year-old Liu Wei for his determination, urging him to keep on pursuing his dreams, and the Beijing native said he would try, quipping, “At least I have a pair of perfect legs.”

Another clown in office…a real one this time

Voters the world over complain about having clowns for politicians, but Brazilians embraced the idea on Sunday by sending a real one to Congress with more votes than any other candidate.

Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, better known by his clown name Tiririca, received more than 1.3 million votes in Sao Paulo state in Brazil’s presidential and congressional elections. That was more than double the votes of the second-placed candidate in Brazil’s most populous state.

Man beats odds to double his fun

For a Missouri man, luck comes in pairs. Against odds of 1 in 1.36 million Ernest Pullen clinched his first million-dollar win in June when he scratched off the “100 Million Dollar Blockbuster” prize on a lottery ticket.

The 57-year-old Bonne Terre, Mo man did it again this month, against even bigger odds, and doubled that prize by winning $2 million on a “Mega MONOPOLY” scratchers ticket he purchased on September 17, according to officials with the Missouri Lottery.

Moooving trophy

When it comes to mooing, 10-year-old Austin Siok is an expert.

The Dyer Intermediate School fifth-grader last week won an annual mooing contest at the Wisconsin State Fair because he sounded more like a real cow than the other about 80 contest participants. And since then he hasn’t stopped mooing, said Austin’s mom, Dawn Siok, 47, of Burlington.

“He’s pretty much mooed everywhere we’ve went now,” said Siok, an administrative assistant for Kohl’s. “He mooed at the bank and he mooed at Kohls. Everyone wants to hear him moo.”

Paul Yarrow: The best thing on the news

Paul Yarrow — star of BBC1, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and even the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network — has appeared on television more than 100 times this year. The only problem is that the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky News and Al Jazeera don’t want him to be there.

What they want is for their TV reporters to be left in peace. What they don’t want is Yarrow — a balding, fat man who often wears a wrinkled white sweater — popping up behind their star correspondents, distracting viewers from the Very Important News that they are trying to deliver.

Mr. Yarrow has pretty much clinched the idea that “reporters” get their news from a police scanner. How else would he be able to be on the scene of 100 live reports?

The Theory of the Universe

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

One cool cabin attendant

After listening to the familiar speech of stowing all carry-on items and how the seat cushion can be used as a floatation device, Delta flight attendant Robin Schmidt then asks a favor of everyone on board.

She passes around a journal, asking people to write a personal message to a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan. When the journal is filled with jokes, prayers and notes of encouragement, she packs it up and sends it along with a care package to a soldier.

“This is not about war or politics,” said Schmidt… “It’s about the personal sacrifice these soldiers are making and if I can do something to brighten their day, then I will.”

Schmidt has brightened a lot of days. Since 2002, she has sent care packages to soldiers she meets on her flights or to soldiers who are recommended to her. She began passing the journals around the plane in 2005 and has done so on every one of her flights since then. Hundreds of soldiers have received a journal written just for them.
