“After careful review…”

The owner of a family van was surprised to receive a ticket in the mail from police in the southern Italian town of Oria accusing him of driving 1230 km/h 764 MPH. The Lizzanello resident had been driving his Fiat Doblo on the SS7 in the province of Brindisi on November 6 and weeks later received a letter demanding that he pay 165 euros US $223.

Italian tickets allow a five percent tolerance to account for the possibility of error. At 1230 km/h, the motorist exceeded the 90 km/h 56 MPH speed limit with an adjusted velocity of 1078 km/h 669 MPH, according to the notice signed by two officers view ticket. Oria police insist that the camera managed by the private firm Sodi Scientifica SpA is perfectly accurate. Officials blamed the incident “clerical error” in a statement issued Thursday.

A great example of the care taken by a police agency to review and evaluate the results of camera enforcement of traffic laws. The officers involved should be disciplined but it’s unlikely that will happen unles it is for making their department the butt of internet ridicule.

Crime tip: Don’t drink on the job

A burglar was arrested after calling police to say he couldn’t get out of the house he had broken into. John Finch,44, spent three days inside the home in Brandywine, Delaware, where he helped himself to the owner’s drinks cabinet. Having knocked back two bottles of whiskey and several bottles of gin he was so drunk he couldn’t find his way back out the house.

Milwaukee; tough town

A US parking (enforcement officer) has been criticized – for issuing a ticket to a hearse parked outside a funeral service.

The woman issued ($40) tickets to the hearse, another funeral director’s car and the vehicles of several mourners.

The incident, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was witnessed by Jim Stingl, a journalist on the local Journal-Sentinel newspaper.

The cars were parked outside a brewery where the funeral service for local businessman Bill Penzey was being held.

Mr Stingl says that mourners told the traffic warden that the vehicles were there for a funeral.

“You are not ticketing a hearse, are you?” one asked. “It’s parked illegally,” the traffic warden reportedly replied.

The tickets were later canceled.

It’s a tough speeding law when you get a speeding ticket while parked

A driver was twice sent speeding tickets after parking in front of a camera because police officers failed to notice his vehicle was stationary, it has emerged.

Jeff Buck parks in front of the camera outside his home on Watnall Road, Nottingham, because he does not have a drive or a garage. But he has been sent two speeding fines by Nottinghamshire Police.

The mix-ups happened because officers failed to spot his car was parked as another vehicle triggered the camera by breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Let’s just check that speed limit sign again, shall we?

Police in North Wales are having to find £18,000 to refund motorists after issuing speeding tickets for people driving more than 30mph – in a 40mph zone…

North Wales Police Superintendent Simon Shaw admitted that police had wrongly believed the county council had changed the speed limit to 30mph in 1993.

Security guards reduced a nine-year-old boy to tears after banning him from sailing his toy boat on a pond because it ‘frightens the fish’.

Noah Bailey was distraught after staff at Chiswick Business Park, in west London, stopped him playing with his model of the German battleship Bismarck.

His grandfather Paul Fabricius, 57, said that when they went to complain about the draconian rule the guard refused to tell him the name of the manager for ‘security reasons’.

Parked in your own driveway? That’s a ticket!

Residents of Toledo, Ohio, are complaining that they received $25 tickets for parking their vehicles in their own driveways.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner…says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways.

During a news conference Monday, Finkbeiner ignored a reporter’s question of whether the crackdown and fines were related to the city’s budget crisis.

And he’s running for re-election. Good luck with that.

Dumb Crook and Dumb Cop…all in one

A detective was arrested for robbing a bank without a mask using his police issue pistol – and making his getaway in an unmarked patrol car.

CCTV of the raid led police straight to Juergen Richter, 55, who allegedly stole £8,000 from the bank in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

Police spokesman Norbert Schaetzle said: “He said he had severe financial problems and wanted to solve them quickly.

Wait until he is dead to do the autopsy, please.

In a bizarre turn of events that seem straight out of an old Twilight Zone episode, police in Khajekalam, India, mistakenly declared a man dead who was found in a semi-conscious state, and sent him off for an autopsy while he was still alive!

Abdul Raza, a road roller driver for the state Public Works Department, was found in a semi-conscious state and declared dead before being properly examined.

“The Khajekalan police informed his family members that Raza was dead and that his body could be collected at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). The news from the post-mortem room had the family members wailing. When we reached there, a constable told us that Raza was actually alive and admitted into the emergency ward,” said Hameed Intiaz, a relative.

The police station denies any goof up, but obviously someone did. It is suspected that the real error occurred in conveying the message to the police.

And a Merry Christnas to you too, officer

Santa Claus has added a New York City traffic agent to his naughty list after she gave him a ticket while [he was] delivering gifts to children. Chip Cafiero says he’ll fight the $115 ticket he received in Brooklyn on Black Friday when he was dressed as Santa.

The 60-year-old retired schoolteacher was riding a horse-drawn carriage and handing out toys and candy canes. An SUV carrying the toys and protecting the horse from traffic was double parked next to him.

Santa says he yelled “Ho! Ho! Ho!” to get the traffic agent’s attention because the SUV wasn’t blocking traffic. But in his words, “This grinch just went ahead and fined me.”

Local politician Martin Golden calls the parking ticket “ridiculous.”

Police won’t comment on it.

Apparently being dead is no excuse

More at  Los Angeles Times

An elderly man was found dead late Tuesday in a parked car that had been ticketed earlier in the day on a street in an unincorporated industrial area near Pico Rivera.

A passerby noticed the man in the driver’s seat of the black Lincoln Town Car near Peck and Rooks roads about 7:50 p.m. and notified employees at a nearby truck shop.

Well, it’s a likely sounding story… not

An unsuspecting passenger who flew to Tokyo has a large package of cannabis in their luggage – courtesy of a bungled [Japanese] Customs training exercise.

An officer at Narita International Airport yesterday stuffed 142 grams of the drug into the side pocket of a randomly-selected black suitcase coming off an overseas flight so that the animal could detect it.

“The dog couldn’t find it and the officer also forgot which bag he put it in,” a Customs office spokeswoman said.

Woman sits 42 years in front of TV. Did I mention she was dead?

The mummified remains of a Croatian woman have been found sitting in her armchair at home in front of a black and white TV set 42 years after she was reported missing.

Croatian police say Hedviga Golik, who was born in 1924, had apparently made herself a cup of tea and sat down to watch the television which at the time was regarded as a luxury item.

They say that would have been in 1966 when she was last seen by neighbours. They said one day she seemed to have just disappeared and they thought she had moved out of her flat in the capital Zagreb.

Police say armed chimp on the lam ignored warning. (Thanks, Bill)

Star-Telegram.com: via Technudge

A 140-pound chimpanzee escaped from a research center by jumping more than 15 feet, snatched a tranquilizer dart gun from an animal worker and threatened police by flailing its arms before an officer shot and killed the animal last month, according to a new report.

Officials said the University of Texas police officer who shot Tony shouted he was going to shoot before firing at the 17-year-old chimpanzee.

…Tony’s escape was one of three at the center since November. Another 17-year-old.

Your truck fell in a hole? That’s a parking ticket, mac.

There’s more at the Daily Mail

If a tree fell on your car and you escaped death by inches, you might expect some sympathy from your local council. But there was no sign of compassion from Wychavon District Council for Nicky Clegg of Stoulton, Worcs, after when a tree crashed down on her car as she drove her 82-year-old mother and 11-year-old son.

Police dragged the wrecked car – with crushed bonnet, smashed windscreen and broken wing mirrors – to the roadside and told Mrs Clegg she could leave it there and pick it up the following day. When she came back, a parking ticket was stuck on the window.

Seven year old is a terrorist suspect…wait! What?

More at Ananova
A seven-year-old boy was stopped three times by airport officials – because he shares his name with a terror suspect.

Javaid Iqbal, from Blackburn, was being taken to Florida by his mum as a treat for passing school exams, reports The Sun. The family faced delays flying out from Manchester and on arrival at Orlando International. And as they flew back via Philadelphia, a computer flagged up the lad’s name and airport officials cancelled their US Airways tickets.

The security alerts were triggered because Javaid shares his name with a Pakistani man deported from the US.

…………………..

Note to security people: See, the thing about names is that they aren’t unique. I have an unusually spelled middle name but have come across three others, of about the same age, with the exact same name, in my home state. One of them was wanted for petty theft. The other had a lousy credit rating and nearly cost me a mortgage loan. So use your list and then use your brain.

A German policeman left a Wiltshire pub and drove straight into a canal after mistaking it for a wet road. Jozef Cene, 38, drove out of the car park at midnight, stopped by the canal, indicated and plunged into the water.

Locals at the Barge Inn in Honeystreet, Wiltshire, waded in to free Jozef from his submerged Fiat Punto, reports the Sun. His legs were trapped in the car door by the water pressure, but rescuers managed to haul him to safety from the chest-high canal.

Berlin policeman Jozef was breathalysed but [the test] proved negative. The hire car was later winched out.
