Fight Against Maturity

“Boy gets prize for catching a bus.” They’re kidding, right? Right?

Schoolboy Bobby McHale has strolled his way to exam success – without even realising it.

In an apparent gift to critics who insist tests are being dumbed down, the 15-year-old was awarded a prize certificate simply for catching a bus. Alas, his brother, 13-year-old Joe, failed.

Bobby did not realise he was being marked for the everyday ‘challenge’ of walking to his local bus stop and clambering on board. That is, not until a certificate from exam board AQA popped through his letter box.

It congratulated Bobby for successfully completing the ‘Using Public Transport (Unit 1)’ assignment.

In case of emergency break window with brick

Picture 8
Cheapskate Chinese bus company bosses are fitting their vehicles with bricks on a string instead of the usual hammers to break the glass in an emergency.

Health and Safety executives in Heilongjiang Province, north-east China, ruled that passengers needed to be able to smash the windows to get out in an emergency. But the Harbin Public Transportation Company said the special safety hammers were too expensive and instead fitted their buses with regular building bricks painted bright orange and tied with a piece of string to meet the new rules.
