More signs of global warming in the UK

When Britain woke up on the first day of the year it was met with freezing cold temperatures, feet of snow in places and the promise of travel chaos.

And now, three days into 2010, forecasters have warned the country to expect continued snowfall for the next ten days – bringing with it added stress for commuters heading back to work after a festive break and children returning to school.

Yet as Britain struggles to cope with the difficult weather conditions, other countries around the world are finding themselves in a similar predicament.

Two scores…from the full length of the field

A schoolgirl goalkeeper is set for the record books after scoring twice in a single match from her own penalty box. Emily Dickson, 14, stunned her team-mates and the opposition with two huge drop kicks down the full-sized pitch.

With both attempts, the ball bounced over the opposing keeper and into the net during the under-15s match, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Emily, from Broxbourne, Herts, is now awaiting confirmation from FA officials, who believe her effort is a record.

What’s round, flaming and flies?

Bradford Telegraph and Argus

A Bradford man has described the moment he saw a UFO in the skies above his home.

Richard Ing, of Westminster Avenue, Clayton, [UK] said he watched in amazement from the balcony of his house as it passed over Bradford city centre, Clayton and off towards Denholme.

The 40-year-old printer said: “There were eight of us who saw it – four adults and four children. We are all sensible people and were amazed by what we saw. It was a massive fireball half the size of an aeroplane.”
