Fight Against Maturity

It’s been fun…

It’s been fun

It’s hard to believe that this blog has been around since June of 2006. As of today there have been 4090 posts and 1,567,337 visits to this blog and I appreciate every one of those visits.

It has been fun but all good things come to an end. As of today I’m retiring from Oldster’s View although the blog will stay up for the foreseeable future. Keeping up with the blog has become work rather than fun and so the time has come to move on. I do plan on being an occasional contributor to Technudge until Bill O’Brien tells me to go away.

“So long and thanks for all the fish.”

Blimp eye in the sky

A Utah city (Ogden) hopes a new airborne crime fighting tool will be ready to fly by Christmas: a 54-foot-long, camera-studded blimp capable of monitoring crime scenes or joining a search…

The Ogden police department has already bought the aircraft with federal grants, and…hopes to begin training by Oct. 1, the Standard-Examiner reported. The 4-foot-diameter, helium-filled blimp will be operated by remote control and be outfitted with cameras, a radar transponder and other devices.

You mean this isn’t a motel?

Police in Tennessee were called to a funeral home where workers found two intruders sleeping inside caskets.

One man escaped, but police caught and arrested Barrett Lance Hartsock, who was charged with burglary and vandalism over $1,000.

According to police the two did $9000 in damage to the two caskets. Maybe because the funeral home didn’t want to sell two slightly used caskets?

That will be $6852, please.

It’s a real-life horror story: Wellington Library’s most-overdue book has been revealed, and its borrower owes a theoretical $6852 in fines.

The Dunwich Horror and Others, by HP Lovecraft, was due back on February 12, 1988.

Although the library charges fines at 80c a day, it sets a cutoff at 28 days, meaning the borrower, if he or she is eventually tracked down, will be liable for a fine of only $22.40.

Need a roomie? How about a ghost?

An unexplained ghostly apparition has appeared in the window of a ruined medieval castle on two occasions over 30 years apart.

The first image (above) was taken by a tourist this year while exploring the ruins of Tantallon Castle on Scotland’s East Lothian coast. Experts are baffled by the image and skeptics are having trouble finding a suitable reason to debunk it.

India releases prisoner who is too old to walk

Pandey, a Hindu priest, was freed on Friday by a court in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on humanitarian grounds as prison officials were finding it difficult to provide regular medical treatment to the “oldest prisoner in the history of Indian prisons.”

“It was getting difficult to take care of a 108-year-old prisoner. We moved an application for his release and the court accepted it,” said S.K. Sharma, superintendent of Gorakhpur Jail, 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the state capital Lucknow.

How nice of them. That’s sarcasm, in case you missed it.

Well, that’s one way to explain it…(creeps quietly toward exit)

The new book by Annie Jacobsen, Area 51, dismisses the alien spacecraft theory for the Roswell incident and suggests that Stalin, inspired by Orson Wells’s famous radio adaptation of the HG Wells novel War of the Worlds, enlisted Joseph Mengele, the infamous Nazi “Angel of Death” who had fled to South America, to create a crew of “grotesque, child-size aviators” who would be flown in a jet-propelled, single-wing Horton Ho 229 and be flown to America to cause hysteria similar to the 1938 broadcast. But the plane, remotely piloted by another aircraft, crashed and the Americans hushed up the incident.

Leonardo! Say it isn’t so!!

Italian researchers who specialise in resolving art mysteries said today they have discovered the disputed identity of the model for Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa – and claimed he was a man.

Silvano Vinceti, chairman of the Italian national committee for cultural heritage, said the Florence-born Renaissance artist’s male apprentice and possible lover Salai was the main inspiration for the picture.

Personnel at The Louvre, where the painting hangs, beg to differ, however.

Predicting the future is a tricky business

In 1910, French artist Villemard produced a series of illustrations depicting what life might be like in the year 2000. Yeah, he pretty much nailed it.

It’s a good idea to read the signs

Workmen laid tarmac around this Ford Focus after the car’s owner failed to heed warning signs informing the public that resurfacing work was taking place. Undeterred, they carried on the with the job anyway – leaving the Ford Focus standing alone on an island in the middle of the newly laid surface.
